Caroline Owens
I became a weaver at age five, when Sarah Oberholtzer’s mother presented her with a potholder loom that let me– Sara was never interested– transform floppy cotton loops into dense, strong squares. Somehow, that repetitive over and under motion created a structure with dimensional cells, each with a visible surface, edges, and a hidden second layer. I spent years experimenting with materials (newspapers, spun fibers, wire, plastic, painted paper), weave structures (plain, twill, tapestry, overshot), and presentation (garments, containers, hanging panels) through traditional crafts. My current work, woven tapestries of paper that has been stained, painted and sanded, continues this exploration of surface and structure.
New works often begin with a strong emotional response to a visual image encountered in my daily life. Others arise from a lifelong curiosity about geology, landforms and forests. Whatever subject I have chosen, I then use photographs, sketches and draft paintings to explore its structure, looking for a resonant visual composition with energy that can be expressed through interlaced strips of paper. The final composition is reproduced at least twice with acrylic inks and paints, building complexity by sanding back to reveal underlying layers. Each painting is then cut into sections and strips for weaving.

John Williams

“Gandhi” © John Williams.
John M. Williams specializes in creating landscape and portrait collages of historical figures. In effect “painting with paper,” John uses hundreds of small pieces of cut paper to create a likeness of his subject revealing the person’s character as well as his historical significance. The results are compelling, multifaceted fine art collages.

Boston oil painter MATTHIAS LUPRI will be back once again this year to Provincetown presenting his latest works in a SOLO SHOW.
June 14-21 and Sept 20-27, 10am-11pm daily.
Large Inner Landscapes, abstract portraits and archetypal paintings.
Please drop on by and say hello.
Matthias has been working within the arts all his life in various aspects. His goal is to integrate painting, music, film, photography, acting, narrative, and poetry cohesively, while drawing from life, dreams, symbols, myth, philosophy and psychology.
“In a general reflection on my art and life, I feel that the unconscious and conscious landscape hemispheres collide creating positive and negative tension within our lives. The unconscious has an existence of time immemorial within your myth, while our conscious life ego awakes daily to a fresh new day. So I question; How do we exist through these our entire lives, shaping us toward the past, present and future as one totality? In which way does the essence of it all give meaning to who we are and contribute to our interactions with each other, our earth and universe?
It has been a lifelong search and journey revealing my art through these philosophical and psychological constructs. Art that coexists and works in conjunction with these constructs and with each other:
painting, music, poetry, photography, film and narrative. The landscape hemispheres and archetypes create new paths to follow and show themselves as personal empirical motifs within the art abstractly. They prove to be part of the memory, dream, reflection symbiosis. It is all much a mystery and interesting pursuit.”

Opening on Friday night.
Amna Greaves was born in New York City in 1966, where she grew up with a passion for art and a belief in the universality of cultural diversity. She attended SUNY Stonybrook, originally pursuing a degree in art and engineering, but ultimately dropped the art program when it became apparent that the department required more than just talent to succeed. She later attended Columbia University and earned a degree in engineering.
Throughout her career as an engineer, Amna was inspired by the punk rock ethos of the 1984 cult classic film Repo Man, which encouraged individualism, creativity, and resistance against oppressive systems. She applied these values to her work, constantly seeking new and innovative solutions to engineering problems.
Despite her success in the engineering field, Amna never forgot her love of art. About a decade ago, she decided to pick up her brush and pen once again, using her art as a means of expressing her message that creativity and the human spirit cannot be suppressed. Her artwork is often inspired by the punk rock subculture, as well as her experiences growing up in New York City.
Today, Amna continues to work as an engineer while also pursuing her art. She sees her work in both fields as complementary, each helping her to understand the world in a unique way. Through her art and her engineering, Amna seeks to inspire others to embrace their creativity and stand up against conformity and oppression.
