Kevin Adams – Returning Artist

April 3, 2017 By Gallery 444

Kevin Adams at Gallery 444 PTown

Kevin AdamsWeek long show. Opening on Friday night.

Kevin AdamsAt the invitation of the then-Soviet government in 1989, Kevin accompanied a traveling solo exhibition of his work across the Soviet Union, and Kevin subsequently hosted two Russian artists whom the government of Mikhail Gorbachev permitted to visit and work in the United States. In addition, the National River Conservation Association commissioned a series of works by Kevin to document the Bio Bio River in Chile prior to construction of a major dam that changed the river’s course and depth forever.

Kevin grew up in Oxford, Maryland, and studied painting at the American Institute in Southern France and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. As an Officer in the United States Marine Corps, he was recognized for his artistic ability and was assigned the job title of Combat Artist. Kevin also has designed theatrical sets, including for the Washington National Opera.

After a number of years of living and working in the District’s Adams Morgan neighborhood, he now resides and keeps his studio in the historic town of Washington, Virginia.

Kevin is represented in “Little Washington” by the Gay Street Gallery, and also by the Julie Heller Galleries in Provincetown, Massachusetts. He has twice had shows in New York City and has participated in solo and juried group exhibitions around the country.

“In a general reflection on my art and life, I feel that the unconscious and conscious landscape hemispheres collide creating positive and negative tension within our lives. The unconscious has an existence of time immemorial within your myth, while our conscious life ego awakes daily to a fresh new day. So I question; How do we exist through these our entire lives, shaping us toward the past, present and future as one totality? In which way does the essence of it all give meaning to who we are and contribute to our interactions with each other, our earth and universe?

It has been a lifelong search and journey revealing my art through these philosophical and psychological constructs. Art that coexists and works in conjunction with these constructs and with each other:

painting, music, poetry, photography, film and narrative. The landscape hemispheres and archetypes create new paths to follow and show themselves as personal empirical motifs within the art abstractly. They prove to be part of the memory, dream, reflection symbiosis. It is all much a mystery and interesting pursuit.”

Deborah Peeples

Deborah Peeples at Gallery 444 PTown

Week long show 9/25-10/2. Openings on Friday 9/27.

My work is concerned with questions about our intrinsic desire to be seen and valued, and the assumptions we maintain about ourselves and others.  A persistent question in life has been the ways in which we protect ourselves and present to others. As an adoptee and parent of a transgender child, the superficial structures we cultivate and the exposure of our core vulnerability are essential to both my artwork and my work as an activist.

In my abstract paintings, I build, layer, and scrape back the translucent beeswax of encaustic. This becomes method and metaphor to uncover and connect with my inner self. Choosing how much to expose or obscure reflects a sense of inspection and introspection. Through its layered and sensual slowness, my work encourages exploration and a sense of journey.

Charlie Hunter

April 3, 2017 By Gallery 444

Charlie Hunter at Gallery 444 PTown

Week long show 6/13-6/20. Opening on Friday night 6/29.

This is Charlie Hunter’s first exhibition even though he has been a professional photographer about 10 years. Charlie grew up in the  scenic and rural Finger Lakes region of New York State. During the 90’s he spent summers in Provincetown and fell for the area and then lived in San Francisco for nearly 20 years. In 2017 he returned to the East Coast dividing is between the central New York area and Provincetown where he felt he always belonged. He draws inspiration from the world around him and as he explains, “I don’t often consciously recognize why I find a particular scene perfect or beautiful, I’m just driven to do it. It’s only when I’m looking at my photographs as a whole that I see various patterns in my work: empty space, softness, calm and there is often a darkness to them with strong shadows and silhouettes. There is also a fairly consistent proportion to my photos that I cannot articulate but which just seems right to me. I find it fascinating how we can let our subconscious guide us in this way, when we let it, and I do my best to mine do so.”
